How Freemora checks your copies

A copy counts as saved only when your computer has recomputed its checksum itself and it matches the phone. Here is the whole path of a file.

What a checksum is

SHA-256 is a file’s “fingerprint”: 64 characters computed from every byte of it. Change even one bit and the fingerprint changes. If two fingerprints match, the files are identical byte for byte.

The path of every photo

  1. On the phone. Freemora computes the SHA-256 of the original file — the same one in your gallery, with location data and full quality.
  2. In transit. The file travels to your computer over an encrypted connection; the computer recognises your phone by the key passed in the QR code. If the connection drops, copying resumes where it stopped.
  3. On the computer. The received file is read back from disk and its SHA-256 compared with the phone’s. Only on a match does it go into the archive and the phone hears “saved”. Otherwise it is rejected and sent again.
  4. In the archive. Plain year/month folders (e.g. 2026/10) with original names — they open without Freemora.
  5. Now and then. “Verify all files” in the computer panel re-reads the archive. With a second copy on another drive, a damaged file is restored from the good one.

If you choose to free up space

By default Freemora only copies. Freeing up space is a separate action you start and confirm yourself. Right before it, the computer re-reads each copy and checks its SHA-256, and the phone recomputes the original’s SHA-256. Anything that changed, can’t be read, or can’t be reached is skipped. Deleted items go to the phone’s trash for about 30 days — the Android trash, or “Recently Deleted” on iPhone; after the trash is emptied, deletion can’t be undone. If iCloud Photos or Google Photos sync is on, deleting on the phone may remove the photo there too.

What checking doesn’t do

It won’t save you from the failure of your only drive, theft or fire: a copy at home is one copy. Add a second copy on an external drive and keep what matters most somewhere else as well.

Freemora is beta software without warranty. Checks lower the risk but don’t remove it: drives fail and computers get lost. Keep important photos in at least one more place. See the Terms of use.
